Drink Yourself Creative

The Act of Drinking Beer with Friends Is the Highest Form of Art. Agree or disagree, it's the name of San Francisco artist Tom Marioni's most famous work and a good starting point to his approach to creativity. Since 1970, the same year he founded the Museum of Conceptual Art, Marioni has invited friends over once a week to be social and drink beer as an artistic gesture focused on action rather than on any single object. It was a radical notion at the time and is still worth considering. In 2008 Marioni enacted Drinking Beer at SFMOMA for the run of its "The Art of Participation" exhibit, turning the museum's Koret Visitor Education Center into a makeshift bar once a week tended by friends and special guests. Now Marioni gets the art party started in the Tenderloin for one night during Gentleman's Club week, a gallery's playful take on the city's secretive all-male institution the Bohemian Club. Fortunately for us, all genders are welcome here, and Marioni takes on the role of stand-up comic as he delivers a routine called "Beer, Art, Philosophy, and Jokes." We're hoping for gossip about Marioni associates such as John Cage and Ed Ruscha, but there's one thing you can count on for sure: Beer.

Walk into the Cult of Personality

In a gallery that has displayed Mark McCloud's LSD blotter art and the post-apocalyptic interactive sculpture of Josh Short, it's no surprise the curators would make the bold move of turning the space over to Chris Ritson. Ritson makes art that is almost alchemical in nature, incorporating crystals he has grown as well as other wonders of the natural world. He fuses an interest in science with investigations into personal identity. With his exhibition “In the Kingdom of Charisma,” Ritson is the first to make use of the gallery's semiannual residency program, in which artists take three weeks to convert the “white box” space into an immersive installation. Ritson uses video and mixed media to explore how we become drawn to certain personalities, those powerful figures who seem to possess an otherworldly attractiveness whether they are celebrities or politicians. It's brave for a commercial gallery to give an artist this amount of latitude in its space, but the results are nothing if not hypnotic.

With our growing desire to work with artists who create full scale mixed media installations we have decided to help aid this process by allowing two, three week installation periods in January and August. This will allow our artists to transform the viewer's perception of the gallery space and create a site-specific work, thus pushing the traditional ideas of a commercial gallery show by allowing emerging artists to work in a museum like environment.

A celebration of our anxieties pertaining to the body, identity, and nature: "In the Kingdom of Charisma" is a multi-media exhibit created during a three weeklong residency at Ever Gold Gallery. Through installation, video and images created by growing crystals, organisms and media collages, Chris Ritson represents the nuances of how we construct an individual identity distinct from the vast cosmology that animates our lives.

In the presence of an expansive and seemingly divine gift, our opinions become entranced. The power of charisma can be traced like a current through the annals of history, possessing kings and criminals alike. Charisma is an esoteric science; existing, by definition, as a gift from beyond the human realm, and accessible to a select few. It emanates from those who are set apart by a persuasive, interpersonal power; those who we reference through shared narrative, the archetypes and gods, dictators and celebrities.

Chris Ritson has a BFA from the San Francisco Art Institute and is one of the 2011 Headlands Center for the Arts Residency finalists. Ritson has shown in two group shows at Ever Gold in 2009 and 2010, this will be his first solo show with the gallery.

Buffalo sounds like a really amazing place, how does it inspire you artistically and otherwise?

Buffalo is a fine place indeed but I live in Rochester also known as Rock City or Smugtown USA, although since the riots in '64 and factories closing down a lot of that smugness has worn off. Living here has been quite an adjustment but it has been good for me. I don't see any other artists and I don't go to any shows. It is pretty hard to get caught up in all the petty competition when you just sit in your room and work. Also minor league baseball is the greatest thing ever. My wife and I pack sandwiches and ride our bikes to the Rochester Redwings games.

Your versatility as a visual artist runs the spectrum from illustration to collage to sculpture to abstract painting to conceptual art and everything in between…with a consistent level of impressive ability on all fronts.. How do you decide what sort of work to present at your gallery shows?

I am afraid of being type cast. I don't want to become Peter Halley or Daniel Buren. Having a signature style might be great for branding and sales but it seems like death for an artist. I like to make a little bit of everything. Over the last couple years I have made an effort to try and present more consistent shows that develop around themes like loneliness, sexual frustration, unwanted bleeding or happiness. Generally I have several bodies of work going on at the same time and I just show whatever I am most excited about.

What type of people do you suffer the least?

Perhaps it is a product of getting older or just that I don't have a social life but I am not bothered by people that much anymore. I used to get really upset at everything and everyone but that was pretty unproductive. Now I just focus on trying to make work I like and let everything else fall away. There will always be more popular and succesful artists and boring curators but that is beyond my control so why get all upset.

The most?

I suppose this question is asking about those people that I have a lot of patience for. I like to see people make a sincere effort. Even if they fail miserably I still respect the effort and respect them for trying.

Your Website is hands down the best artist website I’ve ever visited, and I’ve visited my share. Do you spend a lot of time interneting?

Not really. I wish I had the discipline to spend more time on the website as I have so many new ideas for categories but I don't like working on a computer. I try and update it every now and then so it doesn't get super stale but sometimes I just let it sit there for a while. I think that a website can be just another extension of an artists' work but most artists' have websites that look like they are applying for jobs at IBM.

Is it true that you are a somewhat legendary racquetball player?

I have a two year undefeated streak to maintain. Eat right, stretch and hit the ball really really hard and you too could be a racquetball legend.

Can I still buy one of your sketchbooks?

I had some recent sketchbooks out as part of the last New York show and I got an offer of $10k for one of them. The money would have been nice as I don't make much but I didn't sell it. I think that at some point I will want to publish a book of my best sketchbook pages over the years and I will need to hold on to them until that happens. I tend to think my best work is in the sketchbooks. Of course you (Jamie) are the Lord of a vast publishing empire so if you want to trade your services for mine I am sure we can work something out that is mutually beneficial.

Phoney Baloney

For the exhibition, Phoney Baloney, Joe Enos will create a space that addresses manufactured realities and contemporary commitments to certain cultural tropes. Since Joe was a child he has studied and been mesmerized by cartoons. His present work interrogates the semiology of his lifelong fascination. Joe uses “real” objects from cartoons− such as cartoon-like representations of wood− and will reintroduce them within the space of the exhibition. The space has been modified in a way that totally submerses the viewer− or consumer− into these cartoon symbols. The exhibition space will be paneled with "cartoon" like wood panels, with plushy grotesque shapes oozing from behind. In addition, the exhibition will combine elements of sculpture and photography that explore shapes invoking gluttony. In the universe of cartoons everything is presumed fake, and nothing has much of a commitment to the assumed laws of alleged reality. The artist perceives in our consumer society a lack of commitments to unified cultural ideologies and semantic order in contemporary popular culture. Through this exhibition, Enos hopes to demonstrate an earnest commitment to his own subjective interpretations of cultural symbols from comics and cartoons. Paradoxically, it is a commitment to something inherently false, fluctuating, and flawed much like contemporary popular culture itself. Through this exhibit and this creative philosophy Enos hopes to create a truly “American” experience.

When did you move to San Francisco

I moved here after getting my MFA and a postgraduate year at U.C.Davis in 1978.

Where did you go on your first trip?

I am still ON my first trip!

Did you spend a lot of time with the likes of Timothy Leary, Jerry Garcia, or Aldous Huxley?

Tim and I tripped together!

I tripped to Jerry but more to Pig-Pen!

What time in the morning did the Feds first nock on your door and what transpired from that day?

The Feds came early last time, {at 2:00 P.M. the first time in "92} but I was up and out already getting my girlfriend breakfast!

When did you start collecting and producing blotter tab art?

I collected for 15 years and then started making it! I have made it for 20 years.

Your collection has over 40,000 pieces- would you say it’s the biggest in the world? What pieces are you putting in the Ever Gold show?

Size isn't everything!

Can you talk about your adventures on the board at SFAI in the early 70’s?

Was there 10 years on the Artist's Board till I became Vice-Chairman under the great Mark Van Proyen in the late eighties! Not as old as I look.....They had the courage to show the first blotter show in 1987!

What can one expect at the opening reception?

At my show: always expect handcuffs and 20 to life! and i hope i can play some Marshmallow Overcoat for us all!

“John Held, Jr. Debris from the Cultural Underground,” chronicles four decades of involvement in the international cultural undergrounds of Fluxus, Mail Art, rubber stamp and zine cultures by the San Francisco artist, writer, collector, bibliographer and cultural historian.

The exhibition explores Held's interest since the seventies in confronting the challenging art of his time, having met artist Ray Johnson, who introduced him to Mail Art, and George Maciunas, the impresario of Fluxus, which counted among its adherents Joseph Beuys, Nam June Paik and Yoko Ono.

Held's interest in the diffusion of open cultural participation over long distances through DiY (Do-it-Youself) practice led to active involvement in the fields of Mail Art (DiY art), rubber stamps (DiY craft) and zines (DiY publishing). Aspects of these fields and Held's involvement with them, are presented in this retrospective exhibition blending art and life over a forty year period.

Held will be lecturing in early October at Black Mountain College Museum in Asheville, North Carolina, on the influence of John Cage, Ray Johnson and other Black Mountain College artists (Ruth Asawa, Remy Charlip, Robert Rauschenberg, Cy Twombly) on current DiY artistic practice, including the incorporation of chance in the contemplation and completion of the creative act.

Held has had solo exhibitions in over thirty countries, lecturing at such varied institutions as the Victoria & Albert Museum (London), National Communication Museum (Berlin), Palace of Fine Arts (Havana) and Academy of Contemporary Art (Moscow). He is the author of several books on Mail Art and rubber stamp art, and his Papers are in the Archives of American Art, Smithsonian Institution.

We went over to the Headlands Art Center to visit Josh Short a few weeks ago. Here are a few images from some past projects and some sketches for his show opening next week at Ever Gold.

IN THE FALLOUT OF COLLAPSE OF THE GREAT AMERICAN FINANCIAL INSTITUTIONS, ENVIRONMENTAL DESTRUCTION OF THE GULF COAST AND THE CONTINUED ABUSES TO HUMAN RIGHTS ALL AROUND THE WORLD IT HAS BEEN ARGUED THAT WE ARE LIVING IN THE APOCALYPSE. Jeremiah Jenkins Studio Visit

Every time I hang out with Jeremiah I get inspired in the sense that I see the potential for exploration of life through art- looking at everything with a new eye- that in turn makes me really start to see the daily hypocrisies of this society. When I went to art school they told me that art is supposed to make you think about stuff- and this is exactly what Jeremiah’s work does.

I lived with Jeremiah for about three years in North Beach and then before he moved into Lobot studios in Oakland I think he went to Hawaii for a few months to try and be a pro surfer but that didn’t work out- something about an evil girl…now all he does is make art, shop for stuff to make art at places most people wouldn’t even think of going, camps in a tent next to malls for artistic research, is trying to make a raft to swim across the bay, rides his skateboard, and then makes more art. He is also the funniest person that I know- he actually does standup too so that helps.

Anyways this new project Blue Collar Bushido will make you think about your life, something that most art isn’t able to do these days.

Blue Collar Bushido explores the similarities between pre-industrial Japanese samurai culture and contemporary manual labor. The show will honor those, who in dedicated pursuit to their profession often risk life and limb to fulfill the demands of society. The attitude and philosophy needed by construction workers, janitors, and anyone that works a low-pay/high-risk job reflects the ideas outlined in Bushido (the samurai code of conduct).

Blue Collar Bushido is a multimedia show including sculpture, video, and photography.

Jeremiah Jenkins is a Tennessee born artist, based in Oakland, and very familiar with low-pay/high-risk jobs.

Artist Book Release and Photography / Sculpture Show

EVER GOLD is pleased to present a book release and art show for peripatetic local Charles Linder, aka cashcowboy. It would seem that Linder’s new book GOOD COP / BAD COP was designed site specifically for the gallery, however, the inspiration came from abroad. Ever the aspiring underground archaeologist, Linder’s newly discovered cave is a trove of saucy Polaroids chronicling one man’s forays into the red, taken mainly in Rio de Janeiro. Linder acquired the archive in a storage locker auction in Berkeley and concluded that they were all taken by one man, a retired African American police officer from Sacramento.

Here, Linder presents his reproductions of polaroids of the subjects chosen for reproduction in the book. An avid hunter but an ardent hater of taxidermy, Linder presents his “ repaired “ taxidermies as sculpture. On the opposite wall, figures from Linder’s fiberglass menagerie stare pensively at the two-dimensional taxidermy across the way on the other wall; duct-taped wild boar heads staring vacantly at the low tech digital prints of carnal trophies. The catalog contains an essay by Paul Karlstrom about Charles’ work and methods.

“Nonetheless, although Linder is on somewhat slippery ground, I believe he is entirely serious in his endeavor. This is not a Mitchell Brothers entertainment by any means; it is a means to examine art and his own motivations. To do so honestly, which here is the case, is brave. And he does not turn away from the less pleasant implications. For this he should be complimented, as an artist and as a man. And with that in mind, it is difficult to view Good Cop/Bad Cop as anything less than serious art.”
